Semidiurnal internal tides off the east coast of Korea inferred from synthetic aperture radar images

چکیده
[1] Semidiurnal internal tides propagating toward and along the east coast of Korea are elucidated from the surface manifestation of non-linear internal wave (NLIW) packets in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images taken on September 2, 1996. The SAR images reveal two pairs of NLIW packets, one on the northern side of the southwestern East (Japan) Sea and the other on the western side. The NLIW packets appear to be generated by the semidiurnal internal tide and influenced by a temperature front and bottom topography during their propagation. A geometric optics model simulates westward refraction of semidiurnal internal tides under the influence of a mesoscale circulation pattern during August 1996 and bottom shoaling. This westward refraction contrasts with the eastward refraction of two-year-mean vertical displacements and is consistent with the distribution of NLIWs seen in the SAR images. Citation: Nam, S. Can near-inertial internal waves in the East Sea be observed by synthetic aperture radar?
[1] Near-inertial ( 18 hours) internal waves were observed in the mid-western part of the East Sea on May 18 and 19, 2004 using C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Current and temperature measurements obtained during the field experiment from 10 May to 9 June 2004 (IWXES2004, Internal Wave eXperiment in the East Sea), were analyzed to investigate the processes by which near-inertial i...
متن کاملEstimating Oceanic Mixed-Layer Depth from Internal Wave Evolution Observed from Radarsat-1 SAR
ne Radarsat-1 SAR image acquired on 31 July 1998 was used to study internal wave characteristics off the northeastern coast of the United States. The image showed several trains of internal waves, with several wave packets in each train. By assuming that the local semidiurnal tide period is the generating source for these waves, and by measuring the distance between the wave packets, we were ab...
متن کاملTides and Their Dynamics over the Sunda Shelf of the Southern South China Sea
A three-dimensional Regional Ocean Modelling System is used to study the tidal characteristics and their dynamics in the Sunda Shelf of the southern South China Sea. In this model, the outer domain is set with a 25 km resolution and the inner one, with a 9 km resolution. Calculations are performed on the inner domain. The model is forced at the sea surface by climatological monthly mean wind st...
متن کاملTesting the Diagnosis of Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer Structure from Synthetic Aperture Radar
My long-term goal is to continue to test and refine a similarity-based method for the extraction of marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) fluxes from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wind-imagery of the sea surface. I have implemented this method on a limited number of SAR wind-images from off the east coast of the United States using bulk-derived statistics from coincident buoy data as ground...
متن کاملMarine Wind Analysis with the Benefit of Radarsat-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar
A nonlinear regression approach is employed to construct a surface wind analysis from a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisition off the west coast of North America and a collocated operational marine wind forecast. The analysis is iteratively constructed using a cost function that minimizes discrepancies with the wind forecast, the SAR backscatter, and wind directions that are inferred from ...
